Practice Experience

Municipal and Land Use Planning Law

  • Provide legal opinions to municipal staff and Members of Council on a regular basis
  • Prosecute on behalf of municipalities for various matters
  • Draft and Update numerous by-laws, leases and agreements
  • Defend municipalities on civil litigation matters
  • Represent developers, land owners and public authorities on land use planning matters
  • Presented papers and law updates at municipal law seminars

Expropriations Law

  • Negotiate complex settlements
  • Draft and negotiate numerous section 30 agreements
  • Represent both land owners and public authorities on a diverse range of expropriation matters

Project Experience

Toyota Plant Annexation Agreement

  • Provided advice and finalized agreement for municipality granting City of Woodstock the required land for development

School Site Expropriations

  • Represent large developers relating to lands required for school site developments

Road, Industrial and Hydro Development Expropriations

  • Negotiated settlements for land owners on multiple road widening projects
  • Represented expropriating authorities and land owners where lands were taken for highway development projects, hydro projects and industrial developments
  • Successfully negotiate complex section 30 agreements for land and business owners for multiple road and railway projects
  • Initiate and administer expropriation claims for business and land owners

Civil Litigation

  • Successfully defended Municipality against claims made by Contractor related to a tendering issue (see: G & S Electric Ltd. v. Devlan Construction Ltd. v. Corporation of the Town of Tillsonburg, 2008 Carswell Ont 3018)
